Digital Narrative Games

After playing these games, I learned new skills that might help me in any situation in the future. I knew about some of these skills, but they weren’t of my focus or interest. After playing Spent(http://playspent.org/) twice, I felt like it was real, I forgot that it’s a game except when I lost or finished playing. For instance, most of the cases or problems I faced during the game felt real because of previous choices I made or they just sounded real because they usually happen to us. The first time was pretty bad (score: 14 days), I used to make up my choices just to save up money, but this sometimes can cause you to pay penalties and go bankrupt. Whereas, the second time (score: 22 days), I paid more attention to my choices and their consequences in the future. I figured out there weren’t many job options available at the beginning. Regarding the Syrian Refugee game(https://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-32057601), it was different than spent where I felt trapped by the very few options. Not only that, I believe whatever choice you make you’ll end up drowning or caught. I felt that this game wasn’t about winning or losing, but to send a message to the world about the Syrian case and their suffering. I liked the information and videos on the website revealing the true suffering of the Syrians. An improvement could’ve been more options in the game. I choose to play Know yourself (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfifJhjetTC2YS3gJ-QHtbfYG_PNcpjy6d4WWT1KrgG9RHveg/viewform) game because the title attracted me. I always liked games where they show the type of personality you have. In the beginning, I figured out I was being a bit judgmental and biased since every case had its own excuse. As soon as I progressed I managed not to prejudge and assume the best as much as possible. Even if I’m not willing to assume the best based on what ‘s in front of me, I’m not going to react till I see the full image. Sometimes we can’t see the real image behind what’s really happening, and we end up regretting our reactions at the end too. I felt this game was full of good intentions which are not the case in the real world. I chose Losing a Parent (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScff3zm_c_vwAc5Blgb9rpV2CQIoMrr6kUVqESA-E-MM7KEGw/viewform) because of my fear from experiencing this at any time, but I thought to myself let’s give it a try since it’s going to happen whether I like it or not. I felt it was talking about someone specific like maybe the guy who made this game suffered this and reflected it as a game. So I chose to grasp what suited me and to ignore the rest. I liked the parts where he felt grateful and proud of his father and wanted to tell everyone about it. It would be better if more real-life problems were included. Sleep-deprived mom(https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScap1su2i270VXK3DtWGWA683lyU6UkXJer_cSpN2tl0rXCjQ/viewform) caught my attention towards how much moms suffer and sacrifice their health for the sake of their children. This game showed some of the most common situations that happen to any mom, the silly demands at weird timings and stubbornness most of the time. I can’t see a way of improving since the game is only about examples and yes most applicable examples were there. The Voter Suppression game (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/11/01/opinion/voting-suppression-videogame.html) showed the racism in America between white and blacks at the voting. The white people were granted freedom and better facilities to vote freely. I liked this game as it leaves the user curious about the result with different options. Not only that, I liked the fast visual video it took me through. As a sum up, I liked the games where it had a story through it with some guidance to send to a meaningful message to the world. By comparing the above games, some were about a certain country and some about a popular case or even just you. To me, I tend to focus more on the cases since it involves a large group of suffering people. Not to say, others are important as well, no one can neglect the importance of self-improving and self-discovering.
